The Mayan Civilization is one of the most important of their time in the region of Mesoamerica.
This culture was so advanced in technology that they developed and invented so many important things like a writing system, numeral system, astronomical system, the Maya calendar and of course tons of art and architecture with the mayan ruins.
The Mayan ruins had become a treasure for the world, some of them even have been designated as a world heritage site. The ruins are so impressive because of its structure, concept and for the fact that were built thousands of years ago.
You can find them in countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Belice but is in the south of Mexico where you can find a lot of Mayan ruins very close to each other, for example in Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
In this blog, I will share with you 5 incredible Mayan ruins that you can visit if you are planning your trip to Mexico.
1. Tulum ruins
Tulum ruins are located in the coast of Quintana Roo with an amazing view right to the Caribbean Sea. It used to be a Mayan city and served as a connection with other cities where things like jade and ceramics were traded.
It is a very unique place because of its location (in a cliff) and because its different types of structures like walls, buildings and temples.
2. Uxmal ruins
Another incredible example of the greatness of the Maya civilization are the Uxmal ruins. This Mayan city was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of its importance.
The city, is located in Merida, Yucatan and according to studies, it was founded around the year 500 A.D. and has buildings like the governor’s palace, the pyramid of the magician, the nunnery quadrangle, a field where the ballgame was played and many other monuments and buildings.
3. Ek Balam ruins
This place is also located in Yucatan, very close to Rio Lagartos. This Mayan city has a lot less visitors than the others because not many have heard of it, but is just as impressive as the others that exist in the region.
Ek Balam, was a very rich city in its time, had its peak in the year 600 – 900 A.D., but started in the 300 B.C., it has about 45 structures that consist in walls for protection, central buildings, a place for playing the ball game among many others.
4. Chacchoben ruins
The archeological zone of Chacchoben has more than 70 hectares with structures of different sizes. The beauty of this Mayan city is the way that was strategically constructed according to the sun and its light during the day.
Something interesting about this place, is that the Mexican government first knew about in 1972, but wasn’t until 2002 that it was opened to the public.
5. Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico, is famous among tourist because of its relevance for the world and for the beauty of its architecture. Chichen Itza is so significant that UNESCO named it as one of the 7 new wonders of the world.
It has around of 26 Mayan ruins and some of the most important are El Castillo; a pyramid with a temple situated in the center of the city with a height of 98 ft, El Caracol or Observatory, The Temple of the Warriors and of course, a space for the Mayan ball game.
